With so many formats available, the right one depends entirely on where the barcode will be scanned. For retail products sold in stores, EAN-13 (used across most of the world) and UPC-A (common in North America) are the standards checkout scanners expect. If you are labeling boxes, inventory, or internal assets, Code 128 is the workhorse — it is compact and can encode letters and numbers. For books and magazines, ISBN and ISSN formats are purpose-built. And when you need to pack a lot of data into a small space — like a shipping label or a mobile ticket — 2D codes such as QR Code, Data Matrix, and PDF417 hold far more information than a traditional striped barcode. A barcode is only useful if a scanner can read it, and a few practical habits prevent most failures. Always keep the "quiet zone" — the blank margin on either side of the code — clear, because scanners rely on it to find where the barcode starts and ends.
